Demonic currency: Guilt, fear and sickness.
Day 36: Guilt vs innocence. One word makes us cringe. The other makes us feel safe. Today’s ACIM Lesson 36, uses the word “holiness” a lot. ACIM teacher Nouk Sanchez suggests that we swap out the word “holiness” and replace it with innocence.
Luckily, Nouk also gave us a blog post to read because this lesson confused me.
Nouk writes that humans are “obsessed with guilt,” and guilt is the cause of fear and suffering. Worrying, over-controlling and sickness are the result of our attachment to guilt.
When we are truly connected to Jesus and Holy Spirit, love flows freely.
Unfortunately, our ego promotes fear to prove that its point of view is correct, and to block the flow of love from Jesus.
Nouk says that guilt is the “fear of punishment”.
Based on our actions, the ego reinforces our belief that we deserve to be punished. Threats, defensiveness and retaliation keep us on edge.
Nouk writes that when this happens, it’s an indication that we are working in our own strength, and not in partnership with Jesus and Holy Spirit. The ego encourages this level of self-attack.

Innocence: Living without fear means you are joined at the hip with Jesus.
Forgiveness. Constant and ongoing forgiveness of self and others paves the way to less guilt, more innocence.
Often, during the day, random thoughts of past events or conversations float through my mind. Sometimes, I notice, and I stop to wonder why that memory came up. Mostly, I let them pass because I’m focused on doing other things.
Today, after reading Nouk’s post, I asked Jesus why the thoughts came to mind. Am I supposed to react to these thoughts? Do you want to talk to me about them? I was very curious to hear his answer.
He said, “I’m reminding you of people and things that you need to forgive. And yes, you need to forgive yourself too.”
Oh! Now that’s interesting.
Normally, if the thoughts don’t raise any emotional red flags for me, I just ignore them.
Wow! So now, I realize that I’ve been missing out on opportunities to clean up vast quantities of guilt. Like, a lifetime of guilt, built one conversation or situation at a time.
Discipline! To raise up the level of innocence (River of Grace), decrease the level of guilt (River of Shame).
Finally, a practical solution to a confusing lesson.
As the song says, I expect a “million little miracles” to come from giving up guilt, and forgiving people (plus me).
How could that NOT be true?
And maybe that’s why they call it, “A Course in Miracles.”
