ACIM Lesson 11: My Daily Reflection (meaningless)

Distracted by meaningless thoughts,

Day 11: When I flipped the page to read ACIM Lesson 11, I was delighted to find some notes I jotted down on January 11th, 2009.

I don’t have notes written for every lesson because half the time I didn’t understand what was being said. But here are the three sentences that I wrote at the bottom of the page:

  1. I use my meaningless thoughts to block the Holy Spirit and the light.
  2. Whilst I am distracting myself with meaningless thoughts, the light is not available to others.
  3. I’m practicing getting out of the way now.

In addition to my notes, these lines from Lesson 11 popped off the page today: “The introduction to this idea, in particular, should be practiced as casually as possible. It contains the foundation for the peace, relaxation and freedom from worry that we are trying to achieve.”

In 2009, I joined a group going through the course together. We had a teacher, and we met once a week in a room in a very old, New England church. I remember that the entrance was always dark and very slippery during the icy winter months.

But once we got inside our meeting room, there was an over-sized fireplace, and large, comfortable couches.

Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to light the fireplace. And since we were there when no one else was around, the heat didn’t get turned on until the first person arrived. By the time it got warm, we were finished and ready to go home. I shared a blanket and kept my coat on.

We were a small group of 7 or 8 people from different backgrounds. We bonded over our need to understand the course. I’m sure our teacher gave us those three sentences.

Looking back, I see that the message they reveal is just as important now as it was then.

On today’s ACIM video, Coreen Walson says, “Today’s idea introduces the concept that your thoughts determine the world you see.”

Continuing, she says, “…to recognize that we’re never a victim is significant. Many of us hold onto our stories of victimization. This thought that what we’re experiencing actually comes from our mind carries a level of accountability that people often resist. The ego resists this knowledge.

EGO definition:

  • The False Self: The ego is seen as a psychological construct, a collection of thoughts, beliefs, and identity (like your name, job, etc.) that creates a sense of being a separate “I” or “me”.
  • Source of Suffering: Identifying too much with this separate self (the ego) leads to feelings of isolation, fear, and dissatisfaction, as it creates a disconnection from the interconnected whole.

To “identify” with the ego implies a choice. What are we leaving behind to choose to identify with our ego? Maybe it’s the Unified Space, the place we share with the Holy Spirit.

The ego, the space we share with demons, definitely belongs in the split mind section of the Gap Diagram. Meaningless thoughts waste time. Distraction is a tool used by demons and witches.

Coreen concludes today’s lesson saying, “Recognizing that what you’re experiencing is not really out there, but is actually your thoughts, is empowering. This concept will unfold many more times, but this is our introduction to it. My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.” ACIM Video Lesson 11

Disclaimer for quotes: I use an AI tool to capture quotes. It corrects grammar as people are speaking. Why? It’s very annoying. However, it is quick. And the relevance of the quote isn’t changed. So, what do you think? Are these robots a help or a hindrance? Only time will tell.
