#3 – Sticky Things Demon Melancholy Whispers to You: “Oh, what’s the use? No one appreciates you around here. Your role is purely functional. They don’t care that you’re unhappy. But I do! I’m here for you. I’ll keep you company while you have your cocktails and eat too much of your favorite food. Hey! If they don’t care, why should you? Come on! Let’s numb out. They’re not listening to you, but I will.”

ARE YOU CAUGHT IN A TRAP?

WHAT ROLE DOES MELANCHOLY (SADNESS) PLAY IN THE SITUATION YOU’RE CURIOUS ABOUT TODAY?

In the language of combat sports like mixed martial arts (MMA), the behaviors listed below are defined as TRANSITIONS. To improve his or her position in a fight, a fighter adjusts to force his opponent to move in a direction that will eventually end in a trap. In this case, the demon influencer weakens you by whispering the same miserable stories into your ear on repeat. And the beauty of the demon’s vile behavior is that, eventually, you willingly walk yourself into this sadness trap.

DEFINITION: Overwhelming sadness.

  • I just can’t seem to wake up. All I do is sleep.
  • I can’t stop ruminating on the same story. It’s on replay in my head. Since I repeat it so much, I’ve gotten really good at telling it.
  • People are starting to avoid me because I’m always so sad.
  • Why do so many people mistreat me? I haven’t done anything to them.
  • In a weird way, I think I enjoy feeling like a victim who constantly needs to stand up to others who mistreat me. I secretly think I’m a hero.
  • I blame myself really (recrimination). It’s all my fault. I’m responsible for what happened. Everything just went wrong. I wish I hadn’t made that mistake.
  • I feel tense, restless and guilty.
  • I’m always wondering what I could have done better to make them like me more.
  • Am I in the middle of this sadness or am I getting to the end?

The Opposite of Melancholy is Respect

When you feel respected, you feel balanced, connected and calm. You don’t have to defend or protect yourself.

Each Demon Angel represents a set of behaviors. Their job is to influence you away from calm, neutral and centered. They disorganize your thinking (gaslighting) and shift you to feeling upset, disconnected and on the opposite side of someone.

What role does this demon’s melancholy encouragement play in the situation that you are analyzing?

Notice that respect is the exact opposite of how the demon is influencing the situation.

  2. What would have to change to improve your situation? Is something or someone supporting this behavior and allowing you or another person to get away with it? Or are you allowing yourself to be pushed around by a demon influencer?
