Magpie Position, Creepy Wally Attack: Blue Belt Case

Asian woman pink yellow hair wearing jiu jitsu gi cornerman angel

Wow! This happens fast. In the short video below, Rener Gracie, famous jiu jitsu black belt, narrates a situation where a woman is held captive in the front seat of a car. As the bad guy fills the tank with gas, the woman sits quietly in the car.

But then, a miracle! A police car pulls up to just the right spot on her side of the car! She unbuckles her seat belt and patiently waits for the bad guy to unlock and open his door to get back into the car.

Like a cat, she makes a run for it. Opening her door, she heads straight for the police car, jumps in and shuts the door behind her. SAFE!

To build your fight IQ, it’s important to identify the frame of the fight. In this blue belt case, the bad guy has control of the distance within the space. The woman is contained in the car.

Blue belt level demon spotters are able to:

  1. analyze a situation using the DramaGuru Code Words to define the frame of the fight
  2. choose the right responses to deflect, defend and exit
  3. practice setting traps and escaping from them.

Creepy Wally Attack: Too close for comfort. Get this guy off me! The bad guy doesn’t go around the car. He scampers through his car, over the front seat, and out the passenger side door. Then he runs at full speed straight towards the police car. He’s so determined to capture the woman that he’s not thinking clearly. He runs straight into danger.

Magpie Position: The bad guy refused to give up his victim, his “shiny object” , even though the police were there. In this case, refusing to let the woman escape backfired on him. He’s so caught up in recapturing her. It’s like he’s on auto-pilot. But, the moment she runs towards the police, he loses his position and the girl.

Taking the Magpie Position is the hole in this guy’s game. His intense focus on maintaining control of the woman eclipsed his need to save himself and drive away. He held on to his goal of capturing the woman even though, she was safe in the police car.

The bad guy had a different choice available to him to improve his position in that moment. Like driving away, for instance.

Instead, that dude ran confidently towards the police intent on recapturing the woman. But he was too late. He held on for too long.

Know when to let go (surrender) a position that is no longer working. Let go of Magpie (focusing on the woman), and shift to a new position that gives you an advantage. Like coming to your senses and giving up.

I wonder what gave him that kind of (defiant) confidence? I say demons and a network of witchcraft. Someone revved him up by whispering in his ear.

Demons don’t care if you win or lose. Either way, when you follow their lead, you get punished.

But, all’s well that ends well. This situation has a good result.

Choosing to keep his eyes on the prize allows the two cops to capture this bad guy easily as he runs towards them.

And the woman, supported by her guardian angel, makes the right moves at the right time. She sets the trap by running towards safety. Because he’s unwilling to relinquish his prize (the woman), the bad guy runs straight into the arms of a police officer (the trap).

Combat Sports Fight IQ: “The term refers to a fighter’s ability to make the right decisions consistently during the heat of battle. This ability is so important it often determines the outcome of many MMA contests…Fast decision-making allows you to determine the best way to capitalize on any patterns you recognize.” MMA Fight IQ: Analyzing Strategy, Development, and Tactical Decision-Making

Recognizing patterns. Knowing that the man had to unlock the doors in order to get back in the car, she knew exactly when to exit. Maybe she even realized that he would chase her. His predictable pattern worked in her favor.

Being able to find your way to clarity in neutral space is a key skill for demon spotting.

When you keep your mental channel uncluttered by fear and your own scrambled thoughts, the Holy Spirit intervenes. And your guardian angel gives you clear instructions. Thank you, Jesus!

Staying calm and keeping a clear head helps two women deal with their attackers in an efficient and effective way.

Practice and training are put to good use in the second self-defense example. Jiu jitsu! Another woman has a successful ending to a bad situation.

In the second self-defense situation on this video, a man enters a store and grabs a woman’s purse. She immediately treats him to a one-on-one jiu jitsu lesson which he is definitely not prepared for.

Obviously, the woman is skilled and confident with her jiu jitsu. She stays focused on her bewildered target (Magpie Position), maintaining control of him with assistance from bystanders.

In this case, the woman decides to maintain Magpie Position (extreme focus) until help arrives to help her exit safely. She demonstrates the effectiveness of jiu jitsu as a way to use the Creepy Wally Attack too. She is physically controlling the bad guy by being all over him, smothering his every move.

That’s a good example of doing the Creepy-Wally-too-close-for-comfort move.

A word to the wise: If you don’t have the right tools, don’t pull guard. Fighting back isn’t always the best option.

But if your guardian angel is by your side saying, “Go!”, then do your best work. Make your teachers and training partners proud that they train with you. “That’s my girl!”

Thank you to Rener Gracie for this video.
