I do not understand anything I see in this room (on this street, from this window, in this place). ACIM Lesson 3
Day 3: To kick off the conversation regarding today’s ACIM lesson, Teacher Nouk Sanchez asks Teacher Coreen Walson an interesting question. “Which part of me doesn’t understand these things and why?”
In the Lesson 3 video below, Coreen immediately holds up the Gap Diagram to offer an explanation.
To answer Nouk’s question, Coreen explains that the “Split Mind in the Gap” is the part of me that doesn’t understand anything I see in this room.
The goal of the Course is to escape from the trap of the Split Mind. We escape the trap by giving up our resistance and giving permission to Holy Spirit to heal our minds.
Gap Diagram reveals our blind spots
Long ago, back in 2009, when I first studied the Course, nothing like this diagram was available. Now I can more easily see that the familiar mess in the middle distracts me from unifying my mind with Holy Spirit.
I don’t remember my teachers telling me that the goal of the Course was to clear the clutter. As a result, the voice of Holy Spirit comes through.
The 365 lessons in the ACIM Course guide us to shift, release and surrender our need to control. The best advice and direction comes from Holy Spirit, not from our limited point of view.
Uncovering what’s in your blind spot will, at times, blow your hair back. Be brave! Stick with it. Everyone has to walk this journey. The only way out is through.
The Gap Diagram: ACIM

Nouk and Coreen continue to refer to this Gap diagram in the lessons that follow. I love that this tool is available as we begin the lessons.
I love it when Coreen folds the paper in half down the middle allowing the “Unified Minds” on each side to form one complete circle. The circle is the neutral space, calm and peaceful.
The noise in the middle is silenced while the Holy Trinity (God, Jesus and Holy Spirit) connects and speaks with us. Once that happens, we can hear them and be comforted by them in the neutral space.
Self-deception: The ego’s deception, believing it is separate from God, is the TRAP that we live in. The trap is the reason for our misery and our need to control everyone and everything.

AI Summary of Video: ACIM Lesson 3 with time stamps
The concept of “mythical me” refers to the sleeping mind and its persona, which operates in a closed circuit, independently assigning meaning to everything based on past associations (2:28-3:42).
Key points about “mythical me”:
- Fundamental Goal: The “mythical me” has a goal that hides in the unconscious, giving meaning and understanding to everything within its closed circuit (3:12-3:42).
- Election for Death: The teachers explain that God is life, and the ego (represented by “mythical me”) is the realm of opposites. Therefore, all thoughts — not from God — are an “election for life’s opposite,” which is death (3:56-4:40).
- The Ego’s Deception: The “mythical me” believes it can gain something more satisfying than what God offers. But this is a setup by the ego, leading inevitably to death and reincarnation (5:02-5:35).
- Arrogance and Unknowing: The “mythical me” embodies the ego’s arrogance, believing it understands things independently of God’s mind, which is the “height of arrogance” (5:50-6:14). The lesson aims to undo this by acknowledging, “I do not understand anything” (6:19-6:22).
- Humility and Childlike State: Giving up the “I know mind” of the “mythical me” requires massive humility and a childlike state of openness and trust. This is essential for receiving the “kingdom of heaven” (7:59-8:55).
